Taiwan's CPC Corp has issued a buy tender seeking 14 cargoes of LNG to be delivered over an 11-month period. The state refiner is seeking the LNG cargoes for delivery between May 2023 to March 2024.
The buy tender will close on March 15.
The planned shutdown of the No. 2 power generating unit at Taiwan's second power plant on Tuesday could result in power shortages. The Taiwanese government is expected to use a mix of hydroelectric and imported LNG to bridge the gap in power generation caused by the shutdown of nuclear power generating unit No. 2 from Tuesday.
The power generating unit No. 2 with an annual output of 8 billion KWh- the last of two at the nuclear plant in New Taipei's Jinshan District -- is due to be decommissioned Tuesday upon the expiration of its 40-year operating permit, in line with the government's goal of phasing out nuclear power by 2025.
In 2022, nuclear energy accounted for around 8 percent of Taiwan's energy mix, down from much higher levels in previous years.
